President's Letter Important Conference Announcement!!
CODI Board Meeting Minutes
CODI Conference
2001 |
Welcome to the August issue of the CODI Newsletter. Since our last issue of the newsletter we have completed our election and introduced our new officers. I’d like to take time to introduce them to you again. Our new Vice President – President Elect is Greg Nelson, gpnelson@ccrls.org, from the Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library in Salem, OR. The Treasurer is Barbara Lowry, lowryb@philau.edu, from Philadelphia University, Paul J. Gutman Library, in Philadelphia, PA. The Member at Large/JAD Liaison, is Irene Kan, ikan@library.dcr.state.nc.us, from the State Library of North Carolina in Raleigh, NC. The Member at Large/Regional Liaison, is Sue Holbrook, holbrosu@oplin.lib.lh.us, from Germantown Public Library in Germantown, OH. In addition to these elected officers I’d like to introduce you to two other members of the Board. Marge Freeman, mmf@leo.lion.edu, has been appointed to the position of Past President. Marge is no stranger to the CODI Board having served in several capacities in the past. She is the “lioness” behind the LION Consortium of Virginia from Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, VA. Since I served as both Vice President and Acting President last year there was no one to move into the position of Past President. Susan Johns, who served last year was ready to turn over the reins and agreed with me that Marge would bring a great deal of knowledge to the position. Please welcome Marge. The other position, and a new one for CODI, is the Member at Large/ Canadian Liaison. This position is a result of the merger of CANDU and CODI which was accomplished earlier this year. Michael DeKoven, dekovenm@nvdpl.north-van.bc.ca, from the North Vancouver District Public Library in North Vancouver, BC, was appointed to the Board earlier this month at the recommendation of the CANDU Board. We are happy to have Michael join the Board and share with us the unique perspective of the Canadian users. In the future this will be an elected position to be held by a Canadian member. CODI is now a truly international organization of North American users. Please join me in welcoming our new Board members. As a result of the merger of CANDU and CODI the Board has been reviewing the escrow account of which we are the beneficiary. As you may or may not know, CODI, through an account with DSI Technology Escrow Services, has access to the Dynix code in the event of the demise of epixtech. This account is brought up to day periodically by deposits from epixtech of the code tapes. In May we received notification that a tape was deposited which contained the Canadian key. The reason I’m mentioning this is because I want to assure all of our members, especially our new Canadian ones, that we have verified the tapes are complete. And to remind all of you, this is another benefit of CODI membership. We will now be deciding if we want to have independent higher levels of verification, at a cost of course. We will keep you posted. This year I will be attending two international meetings to represent your board. The DUG, Dynix Users Group in the UK, meeting will be in Stirling in Scotland. I will be discussing the JAD process from a North American perspective. I will also be attending the CODA, Customers of Dynix, Australia, meeting in Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory. I look forward to seeing again our colleagues who have attended the CODI meetings in the past and meeting new ones. I’ll keep you posted and hopefully have some pictures to put up on our web site. For those of you who didn’t get a chance to attend ALA in Chicago and stop by the epixtech booth, several of our members gave excellent presentations. I want to thank them all for participating. Epixtech handed out a very interesting document called, The Path to Horizon Sunrise for Dynix Libraries. I was told by a senior staff member that this is a preliminary document prepared to help those libraries planning to move in the near future. To quote the booklet it will give you an, “overview of the benefits Horizon Sunrise offers to your library and the path for Dynix customers.” It contains some good information and it would be a good thing to look at even if you are not planning to move any time soon. And, again, don’t feel pressured. Dynix will be around for a long time, and so will CODI. One more thing I’d like to mention before I end this letter is the possibility of changing our fiscal year. We have been asked to consider moving from our current July – June fiscal year to a Jan. – Dec. one by our accountant. The Board has taken this into consideration and will be discussing it at future meetings. This will necessitate a change in the Bylaws so you will certainly be hearing more about this. Remember to note the CODI 2001 conference in Salt Lake City from March 7th – 10th and make plans accordingly. Eileen R. Kontrovritz |
